I like to connect events in my own life to those in history. When Sept 11th happened, I was in a mid sized town in Wisconsin at work in a restaurant. For the rest of the day, I got to not only watch the news unfold on CNN, but also watch the disinformation and panic spread amongst the people who were eating there or working there. People were convinced that gas was going to be rationed, that terrorists were going to blow up the local mall, and that Arabs would be running wild in the streets with machetes. Which wasn't dissimilar to what I gather people were thinking after Pearl Harbor (which was in its 60th anniversary that year). The Japanese were going to take over California yadda yadda. I don't remember being scared at all, since a small town in northern WI isn't a target rich environment for terror. If they wanted to really scare WI, they'd have to blow up Lambeau or the Miller brewery. However, I don't think scaring Wisconsinites is very high on any terrorists to-do list.
The other historical connection I've been thinking about recently is what Applebee's would do if they could operate in different time periods. They would have been all over the factory-town idea, which would lead to people working for riblets and living in cardboard boxes. The other fun scenario would have been to place them in Nazi Germany. The ability to shoot their employees for any little infraction and not really having to pay, feed, or clothe them would be a huge plus in their playbook. Yes, I love my job. Wankers.
You said "wankers", I love it! I myself sometimes spout that out, or a hearty "bloody 'ell!" I like to call it "English tourettes."

For me, it reveals a secret desire to be British like the people on 'Coupling'. Or summat like that.
