The Packers are 8-1, and some fans still think they should be doing better. I find these people annoying.
I've switched where I've been watching the Packer games locally since my friend Sarah (a Packer fan from Utah of all places) lives closer to there, and I seem to have some sick fascination with slogging over to the East Side (of the Seattle metro area.) It's actually a better place, with more people, better food, and much better service than Goofy's in Ballard. But with more fans comes more crazy fans.
Both times we've gone to watch games (both Packer wins, mind you) there have been people screaming (yes, actually screaming) at the TV while the Packers are winning. It makes no sense. I'll admit, I've cursed Brett Favre and his annoying interceptions. I think the 4th and 26 play almost killed me. But I've never screamed angrily when they've rushed for 3 yards from the 9 to the 6 on 1st down.
Part of it is people being terrible drunks. You could give them money at that point, and they'd be pissed because you were obviously thinking they were a charity case. The other part comes from the recent history of the organization, and has shown up on the internet sites.
Two years ago, the roof fell in on the team. They got a new GM, who is not an exciting guy (the best description I've ever heard of him is 'steely eyed assassin'.) The team was old, there wasn't a lot of young talent, and the writing was on the wall. The team went 4-12 and Brett started his "Maybe I should retire" dance.
Last year, the season began badly, with more young guys being brought in, and no sexy free agents other than Charles Woodson, super CB (people forget this all the time for some reason.) The team started horribly, then closed out the season with 4 straight wins against questionable opponents, finishing 8-8.
This off-season, some people wanted drastic change, tossing around such great phrases as 'You don't rebuild, you reload' and the like. Which is basically the equivalent of saying "Work Smarter, not Harder" and "Give 110%". Now they're 8-1, and the people who thought that they wouldn't do well have a problem. They swore up and down that there would be doom, doom! this year, and the doom hasn't fallen yet.
The answer? My team isn't 8-1 enough. Imagine how 8-1 they would have been if they had done everything I had wanted them to do!
