Nano writology and stuff..

November is National Novel Writer's Month.  I'm going to try it again this year after writing one awful novel (2005) and not finishing an awful novel last year.  This year, I'm going with a melange of things I know well.  Fantasy Fiction (swords and sorcery, not BDSM you pervs) with a distinctive sarcastic flair.  I think I can be snarky about something I love for 50k words.  At least until Thanksgiving, which is usually where the whole thing comes tumbling down.

    I've followed the steroid storylines, but there's something depressing about seeing it al laid out in front of you in one big lump. The Olympics seem to be a joke, and baseball looks like it's championing the worst aspects of Sport: codes of silence, cheating to get ahead, and stupid denials.

    Wow. World War II is seriously one of the most depressing events in world history, and this book only covers what happened in Europe. Max Hastings pulls no punches when it comes to morality, yet never reall loses sight of the fact that the Western Allies were the best of many bad choices.

    A pretty morally neutral look at what an Empire is and whether or not America is moving towards it.

  • KT Tunstall -

    KT Tunstall: Eye to the Telescope
    A good friend of mine once noted that I tend to like rocker chicks. I'm not sure Michelle Branch and KT count, but I tend to like the female voices better than males, and acoustic over electric. KT has a good voice that go from dreamy and etheral to a little raspy with some steel in it. I always say that if you get 4 songs that you really like off of an album, it's a good one, and thus far 5 have hit heavy rotation on my iPod. (*****)

    I didn't think they could get better, but the collaboration with Death Cab for Cutie seems to have paid off in a more poppy sound that expands upon some of the songs I liked more off of So Jealous. Hmmm. I still don't sound like a music critic... (*****)

    The album by the female axis of Frou Frou. Quirky electronica, with a voice I could listen to for hours. Gotta love the Brits. (*****)
